Lovingkindness Illuminates My Being a Guest

Day 1

With gratitude for the Chesed sh b'Chesed expressed by cousins on Day 1 of Omer Counting on 2nd night of Pesach at Seder.

Dayenu that Merle and Michael Russ invited me (and dayenu, also my sister) for Seder, and Dayenu, they also extended the invitation to a couple dear friends of mine that they didn't know, as well as to all others at their family Seder including their own family with cutest little granddaughter. A visually beautiful table laden with meaningful and personal Pesach ritual symbols and spring flowers to welcome us all.

Following a most delicious meal and conversations about what we stand for on our journeys, with joys and fears, I regretted that I had to race out to do my most days mitzvah. My expressed Chesed is helping a friend who turns 92 next week.  I put eye drops into dear Edith's eyes before she goes to bed. Last night I kept her waiting a bit longer as I enjoyed Seder. As I entered Edith's home, she was giving her cat the desired late night snack. The cat would then share love with Edith. Lovingkindness rolls around.

Thank you, dear cousins Mike and Merle, for hosting me for your wonderful Seder each year.
I treasure these holidays with you and family.   - Joy

TODAY 5779

Rereading this Omer Day #1, I am also saddened to recall that exactly one year ago my dearest "best friend forever” (as she called me) Edith, obm, died, day before Easter, her holiday. And the invited guest I refer to, Suzanne, z"l, my beloved friend since college in the sixties, also died since that Seder. Love remains.
I love my cousins Mike and Merle who hosted me for Seder.
Chesed sh b’Chesed.
BlesSings, Joy
Chag Sameach
Today is Easter Sunday and of course, Pesach, 2nd day.

May the refinement work of cosmic cleansing that I do on myself during the 49 days of Kabbalistically Counting the Sephirat HaOmer help me to mamash/truly be who I am, and need to become. I need to delete klipot/husks (negative influences) and again ready myself for Shavuot by strengthening, elevating and perfecting my midot/character traits.

My goal is to mindfully & Sephirotically examine mysef during each of 49 days of Counting the Omer,
and delete blemishes to purify in preparation going toward Shavuot.
It feels good to know and recognize that the compassionate action we share as friends,
is because we are created B'Tzelem Elokim, in the image of the Holy One.
"Love your neighbor as yourself"  I AM the Eternal One."  (Leviticus 19:18)

Lovingkindness Illuminates My Way to Strangers and Friends

Day 1

During 2nd night Seder with my local Chabad, I expressed Chesed to others because there were opportunities. My heart oppened to strangers, and they received the lovingkindness I offered.

People whom I don't know arrived. They'd never been to this Chabad and don't live around here.  I could see that the woman's hand (my age) was dangling (stroke?), so I offered to help her with her elderly mother and the wheelchair.

At my table I expressed compassion to another single woman my age because she said that her elderly mother is on hospice and her daughter-in-law across the table from me, is undergoing treatment for throid cancer. I listened and offered blesSings. Must be hard to have a 7 year old child going through this, and also to want more children, and not be able to at this time, as the husband expressed. After some time, we discovered that the married son and my daughter know each other from their Jewish day school. Small world.

During Day 1 I went to my elderly friend, Edith, to help with her eye drops, as I do most days when no one is around. I will go back late afternoon to give those scheduled eye drops.  While visiting Edith she had me help a neighbor of hers who had an acute issue. I took care of what needed to be done, and did some brain-storming to further help the issue. (Later the long-distance issue was resolved.)

On this Day 1, in Lovingkindness, I've begun to prepare a present for Edith's 91st birthday arriving in two days.
I've also created and sent a get well card to another friend recovering from another cancer surgery.
May I be blessed to be a vessel to offer blesSings to others.

The Light of Lovingkindness illuminates my way.

- Joy Krauthammer

Attending 2nd day Pesach Seder with an older cousin at her new kosher senior residence so that my cousin should know someone and not feel alone, a stranger sat down next to me at the table on my other side. At Seder I had hoped to sit with someone I knew on my other side but my cousin had other plans.   The elder stranger was brought in, assisted by an aide but the aide was not able to remain at this senior residence Seder.  It didn't take me long to realize that the now unassisted woman (whom I'll call Sarah), due to her severe arthritis was not able to turn Haggadah pages, nor cut her Seder meat meal, or make her voice easily heard, or do other things for herself that are easy for me to do. I realized Sarah's difficult predicament and with her permission, I became her hands, turning Haggadah pages and cutting steak, and was her voice for the waiter.

I don't even want to see rare red meat, but this was my Chesed to Sarah, whom I had not previously known. I hoped she was not uncomfortable with a stranger assisting her. I was grateful that for the counting of the Sephirat HaOmer, Day 1, I was able to give a stranger, someone I don't know-- Loving Kindness in Loving Kindness.  This was a revealed blesSing for me when I wasn't allowed to sit next to the other person I also knew.  For my cousins and the other people at the table I had not known, I shared what the Sephirotic ritual, Counting the Omer, is all about because the Seder leader did not share  the meaning of the ritual begun each year on Pesach second day.  I've been blessed with fine teachers, and mandated by my rabbis to share what I know. I also share my heart.

How do you share your heart in lovingkindness?
How many folds, layers and valleys are to be revealed and discovered
in the harmony of your heart.

Today, Omer day 3,
I celebrate the birthday of my 91 year old friend, Edith, who composts her beautiful roses (and veggies).

PSALMS OF MY SOUL
ספירת העומר

At the Apple store today while I was waiting an hour for the group trainer to come to my assistance (after I'd had my private lesson), I helped another woman student. Elana is a sprightly Israeli American senior, at least a decade older than I, and travels half an hour each way to her weekly lessons.  I realize tonight as I counted day 3 of the Omer, Tiferet sh b'Chesed, that today's mitzvah really fits the Sephirat HaOmer for tonight.

As I munched on matzoh, Elana brought her computer to where I sat and she opened her laptop and showed her family photos to me; beautiful children and growing grandchildren. I saw the military photos from when she had served in the Israeli Army, and her grandson had also served. Her grandchildren call her "Savta". At first, I didn't understand when Elana said she's lost him. I questioned Elana. Two years ago he died "from drugs." Tears came.  Then she shared another photo of them both sitting together and broadly smiling with light shining through their faces.

Looking at the happy photo, my heart deeply felt the sadness of Elana's loss. With compassion, I asked Elana, whom I barely knew, if I could show her how to digitally crop the photo and put them together in an oval matt, deleting most of the cluttered background. I would beautify her photograph and bring more harmony to Elana.

With my Heart filled with Loving-Kindness, I taught Elana what I had recently learned to do in a new program; and we digitally drew an oval mat around their faces, bringing them closer by deleting the rest of the excess photo. The Tiferet heart-space that Elana holds for her deceased grandson is evident. I am grateful that I could participate in the further bonding of Tiferet sh b'Chesed.

Only last week Elana and I spoke at the Apple store, and then sent creative heart-felt Passover greetings to each other in e-mail. With Chesed, I had admired her creative photo work.

I feel that the photo's home-grown garden tomato embraced in my hand represents my holding Elana in my heart, as she holds her grandson in her heart.

How have you with Chesed embraced a stranger or loved one?

TIFERET sh b'CHESED

Sooo happy early this morning; my heart is mamash so warm because my 5 year old Cutie Pie called me while on holiday on Omer Day 3 and told me about her dream- that I was visiting her in her classroom at school on Visitor's Day, and my sister was at another table. I told my darling granddaughter that her energies for the day are in alignment with the universe.Yay. This is Harmony, Joy and Love wrapped in LovingKindness. Happy Pesach.
I also told my Cutie Pie that energies are like what she may feel while she does yoga and chants in serenity.

TIFERET sh b'CHESED

Also today a note I wrote to the daughter of my beloved 95 year old friend Edith (on hospice) whom I visited yesterday while she was surrounded by loving family...
G*d bless you for being caregiver. Please know that I send you so much heart-felt love during this journey.

By the end of today before sundown, in Tiferet sh b'Chesed, I went to say maybe my final goodbye to dearest friend Edith, surrounded by loving family. I gave her kisses, held her hand, stroked her, and told her how much I love her. I believe she can hear me. Told her my family loves her too. On this day filled with heart and  loving kindness, the tears flow...  Ahh, each year I talk to Edith about The Omer, and today I also did that. What beautiful energies today we shared. Heart and beauty enveloped by Loving Kindness.  Tried to bring as much harmony to medical condition as I could, as we all could, as Edith listened to the Tabernacle Choir, her favorite.
May G*d bless dear beloved Edith with a transition, without pain, but with ease, with Harmony in Loving Kindness. I love you, Edith.
